PHIUS-RESNET-Eco Smart QA/QC Partnership

On February 17, 2011, PHIUS and RESNET announced an agreement to collaborate and align the modeling output (projected annual energy use) generated by the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) with the outputs generated by REM/Rate software, which is used to produce a HERS Index. With implementation of a RESNET-compliant QA/QC program, this alliance will yield several critical benefits to designers, builders, and owners of structures built to the Passive House Energy Standard:

  1. • Assignment of an accurate HERS Index to buildings that meet the Passive House Energy Standard

  2. • Eligibility for federal, state and utility incentives, rebates and tax credits

  3. • Eligibility for LEED points, Energy Star certification, and recognition in other national, regional and state green building programs

  4. • Eligibility for listing of the project on the PHIUS quality-assured PH project database.

  5. • Rigorous quality assurance for owner, design team, and code and compliance agencies.

This partnership provides a standardized method of meeting Quality Approval requirements for testing and verification of Passive House projects by an independent party. It does not replace or change the Passive House certification process. Passive House Consultants will continue to employ the PHPP to model and submit projects for Passive House certification.

More information about the QA/QC component

To launch its RESNET-compliant QA/QC program, PHIUS has designated Eco Smart Building as its lead QA/QC provider. Eco Smart Building a RESNET Certified QA/QC Provider and a Certified Passive House Consultant. For designers and builders, launch of the QA/QC program means:

  1. • The on-site verifier (HERS/RESNET/Green Rater, etc.) for any project seeking certification to the Passive House Energy Standard must be approved by PHIUS and Eco Smart.

  2. • Eco Smart Building will assign PHIUS-Approved Raters to perform the QA/QC function on PHIUS Projects as they are submitted.

  3. • This requirement includes projects currently in the PHIUS certification process. Builders who have projects under review should ask their on-site verifier to contact Eco Smart Building to apply to become a PHIUS-approved rater (application information below).
